Olive Oil: Is it the new snake oil? #momsmeet

Recently I was given a super cute package from Moms Meet about European Olive Oil. Now I know what your thinking. Isn’t all olive oil the same? Well the short answer is no. The long answer is as follows….

I received this product for free from Moms Meet (momsmeet.com), May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer. As a Moms Meet blogger, I agree to use this product and post my honest opinion on my blog. The opinions posted are my own.

Olive oil is one of those things that you sort of have to have blind faith in. They all look the same and mainly taste the same. So why not buy the cheaper stuff and be done with it. Well my friend I hate to break it to you but you are getting what you pay for. On March 4, 2014 there was a class action lawsuit filed against Olive Oil companies for falsely labeling oils or using cutter in their oils and claiming them to be “pure”. Well that’s a bunch of yuck! Since then I try my best to know about where my oil comes from.

We normally use olive oil for dressing or the occasional bread dipping. Some times I use it for cooking since it has a high smoke point. So I’m picky you could say. You could also say I was really happy to get this package from Moms Meet as part of the “Flavor Your Life” campaign. It contained a bunch of insightful information about EVOO and the Flavor Your Life Campaign.

From their facebook page:

“Flavor Your Life is a campaign funded by The European Union and a consortium of European olive oil growers. The program aims to educate consumers on the benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Europe, including: Taste, Health, Functionality, Heritage, and Quality.”

So cool. It’s a bunch of farmers and growers trying to spread knowledge. I can dig that. In my package I received what could only be called the cutest little bottle of EVOO, an adorable dipping dish and a few recipe cards.EVOO

But alas I had no bread worthy of such a treat. Until I told Hubs about the package and he ran out to grab a nice Italian loaf. I ran to my cabinet to find some dripping herbs I had bought from out local tea/herb store. Did I mention I love our town sometimes? Really do! And we made a fancy post-kids-in-bed treat for ourselves.

After the bread some how disappeared I realized I was eating some amazing EVOO. The color was much richer and the taste was earthy and rich. Other EVOOs I had used before were bland and pale in comparison. I didn’t even need the herbs (although they were awesome too!) I can tell you going forward, I will be looking for oils from the Flavor Your Life campaign. These oils are held to a higher standard and you will taste the difference. I sure did! Look for EVOOs from the Flavor Your Life group for your next meal.

How to store your EVOO:
Store oil in a dark cool pantry away from heat and light, which causes decay. 57°F is the best temperature for storing and beware not to store your oil next to the stove. To ensure freshness, consume oil within 6 months from opening.
